Not Just a Pitch Contest
UpStart brands itself as India's national business model competition, and the eligibility bar reflects it: entrants have to be actually incorporated startups - officially registered businesses with founders as principal owners - not student teams pitching an idea on a slide. Rather than a single pitch, competing companies go through multiple rounds of screening, described by E-Cell as "brainstorming sessions at different levels with face-to-face mentoring," refining the business itself before they ever reach a judging panel.
The Format
This year's cycle ran regional rounds across four Indian cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad - and for the first time added a fifth: Seoul, South Korea, which is where the competition's international field came from. Regional winners moved into a four-week mentorship phase, followed by an elevator-pitch round in front of VCs, before the Grand Finale on IIT Kanpur's campus. The competition is backed by a prize pool of over ₹15 lakh, plus incubation access, dedicated mentorship, and partner perks from firms like Delhi Angels Denx and The StartupLab for the startups that make it through.
Who Else Made the Podium
ZeroMoblt topped a field of 220+ startups from across India and South Korea, finishing ahead of Kshatra Labs (1st Runner-Up) and Ruskle (2nd Runner-Up) in the competition's final round.
For a company that started with three founders and a parent-teacher meeting, the win is a data point in a broader pattern: real operators, at a real campus-mobility problem, getting recognized by rooms that have no reason to be generous - investors, industry bodies, and now one of India's top engineering schools.
